SALCC’s Derek Walcott Library Inscribed on UNESCO Memory of the World Regional Register

The Derek Walcott Library of the Sir Arthur Lewis Community College has been accepted into the UNESCO Memory of the World (MoW) Regional Register. This inscription was confirmed during the XXV Annual Meeting of the Memory of the World - Latin America and the Caribbean (MoWLAC), held from 10–13 November 2025 in Lima and Cusco, Peru.

The Memory of the World (MoW) Programme was launched by UNESCO in 1992 to preserve valuable archive holdings and library collections all over the world. It aimed to prevent “collective amnesia” by ensuring these historical items were both protected and accessible to the public.

The MoW inscription underscores the unique value of Sir Derek Walcott’s personal library as an irreplaceable body of Caribbean and global literary memory.

We at the Hunter J. François Library are honoured to steward this cultural treasure here at the College.

McDiarmed further commented, “This recognition strengthens SALCC's position as a national custodian of cultural heritage, and enhances the international visibility of the Sir Arthur Lewis Community College and the Derek Walcott Library.”

The Derek Walcott Library contains the entirety of Sir Derek's personal library. The materials reflect his literary, artistic, and intellectual world. It joins other Saint Lucian works on the Regional Register, such as The Roderick Walcott Collection (2010) and the Sir Arthur Lewis Papers, XXth Century (2011).

The Derek Walcott Library is located on the SALCC Morne Campus, open during the hours of 9:00am - 6:00pm (Mondays - Thursdays), 9:00am - 3:00pm (Fridays), and 10:00am - 3:00pm (Scheduled Saturdays).
