SALCC Celebrates Graduation of 135 Saint Lucia Fire Service Officers from Specialized Training Programmes

On Wednesday, July 30, 135 members of the Saint Lucia Fire Services (SLFS) graduated from specialized training programmes facilitated by Sir Arthur Lewis Community College (SALCC). The ceremony was held at the Finance Administrative Centre, Pointe Seraphine.

These programmes, Foundations of Strategic Supervision and Instructional Methodology, are a product of a Memorandum of Understanding which SALCC signed with SLFS in 2023. Ditney Downes, SLFS Chief Fire Officer, explained in his opening remarks that these programmes were aimed at addressing the skills gaps within the ranks related to leadership and mentorship.

Out of the 135 graduates, 102 completed the Foundations of Strategic Supervision course (October to December 2024) facilitated by Dr. Ernest Ottley. It equipped learners with the essential technical and soft skills for effective supervision, enabling them to manage relationships and align with evolving organizational goals. The other 33 officers completed the Instructional Methodology programme (November 2024) facilitated by Dr. Sherine St. Omer and Michelle Charlery, which provide candidates with the knowledge, and tools to design and deliver instruction to their fellow firefighters.

“Moments like today are what inspire Sir Arthur Lewis Community College to continue forming strong partnerships with national agencies and institutions,” said SALCC Principal Dr. Madgerie Jameson-Charles, “because the ultimate aim of education is not to get a job, but to empower you to serve one another well.”

Minister of Education Hon. Shawn Edward congratulated the firefighters for completing their training and also encouraged them to strive for greater excellence in the profession.

Your [profession] is indispensable in nation building. I look forward to seeing a lot more firefighters applying for the scholarship opportunities that the Ministry of Education, and by extension the government, is making available to you. — Honourable Shawn Edward, Minister of Education

Downes expressed gratitude to the facilitators, course coordinators, and SALCC for its partnership, while providing words of confidence to graduates; “The fire service doesn’t just need leaders but great leaders,” said Downes, “After watching your journey through this programme, I am confident that you are ready to take on the mantle.”

A new cohort of SLFS members have already begun training.
