SALCC Students Tackle Geopolitics and National Interests at NCPC Debate

In support of the National Competitiveness and Productivity Council’s (NCPC) Productivity Awareness Week, the Debate Society of the Sir Arthur Lewis Community College participated in a debate competition on October 8, 2025.

Hosted at the Finance Administrative Centre, the debate focused on the moot, “Saint Lucia's long-term development is tied to U.S. hegemonic power and maintaining those ties should be our primary focus.”

[This topic] is one that invites us to examine not just international relations, but the very path that we envision for our island’s future. Lisa Florent-Montoute, Director of the National Competitiveness and Productivity Council (NCPC)

The proposition team consisted of Year 2 CAPE student Phoebe Popo and Year 2 Biology student Jaiden Leon. On the opposition side was Year 2 CAPE student Ethan Glasgow, who is also the Debate Society president and Year 2 Electrical Installation student Leekuan Lewis.

“The College commends the National Competitiveness and Productivity Council for creating this platform where young minds can exchange ideas and deepen their understanding of national and global development,” said Nathalie Jolie-Fanis, Director of SALCC’s Marketing and Communications Department.

After each side presented their arguments and rebuttals, the panel of three judges announced the results: Proposition Final Score: 587 pts | Opposition Final Score: 599 pts. The opposition team was victorious and Ethan Glasgow also received the Best Speaker Award. One of the judges, Dr. Thomas Samuel, praised the quality of the debate in his remarks.

We have been treated to a very wonderful debate. As we (Saint Lucia) try to navigate the shifting dynamics of the geopolitical landscape which is ever-changing, we have choices to make... we don’t have all the answers, but I can say to you that some of the themes underpinning that decision were explored here today. Dr. Thomas Samuel, Trade Consultant and Advisor, Ministry of Commerce; former SALCC lecturer

The other judges were Yashid Charles, webmaster of the Organization of Eastern Caribbean States Commission (OECS) and member of the Platinum Artistic Toastmasters Club; and Kimbert Evans, economist in the Department of Finance.

Both teams received the trophies as well as several prizes including electronics, NCPC paraphernalia, and startup accounts compliments of Republic Bank.
