40 Years of SALCC: Shaping Futures, Honouring Legacy

To formally kick off its 40th anniversary celebration, the Sir Arthur Lewis Community College hosted a media launch on its Morne campus on Wednesday February 25, 2026.

Today marks more than the launch of a calendar of events. It marks the celebration of a journey, shaped by educators, administrators, students, partners and communities who have believed in the mission of this institution and contributed to its growth and legacy. Nathalie Jolie-Fanis, Director of SALCC's Marketing and Communications Department

The launch unveiled the spread of anniversary activities SALCC plans to host through the year. Among them, key ones include:

  • The SALCC Think First Challenge, an interactive history-based trivia game celebrating and highlighting the legacy of SALCC;
  • An SALCC Community Outreach in keeping with our commitment to social responsibility, and;
  • Our signature event, the 40th Anniversary Fundraising Gala.

The anniversary logo, designed by SALCC lecturer Ted Sandiford, was also unveiled, which represents the transformation that shaped the College. The green represents growth, the gold representing excellence, and the ribbons wrapped around the number 40 symbolize connections combining into one SALCC family. At the heart of the logo is Sir Arthur Lewis, which reminds us that knowledge, discipline and vision can transform lives.

The theme 40 Years of Excellence: Shaping Futures, Honoring Legacy is both celebratory and forward-looking.

It captures the college's dual responsibility to honor its historic contribution to national development while strategically positioning itself as a driver of human capital formation in an increasingly knowledge-based global economy.

The College formally opened its doors on June 1, 1986, yet its history extends even further back. Before the Morne Technical College or A-level, the Morne was a site of struggle and resistance. Dr. Winston Phulgence, Vice Principal of Academics, explained at the launch that in celebrating the College's anniversary, the institution is also paying tribute to the ancestors who fought for freedom during the colonial era.

Cletus Springer, Chairman of the SALCC Board of Governors, shared Dr. Phulgence’s sentiments by emphasizing SALCC’s role in building up the next generation.

From humble beginnings, we have grown into a dynamic institution that continues to empower the next generation of leaders, thinkers, and innovators, Mr. Cletus Springer, Chairman of the SALCC Board of Governors

The College looks forward to engaging all its stakeholders during this festive time and invites the public to be a part of our various upcoming events.
