The demand for increased numbers of persons trained in the field of Information Technology (IT) is being emphasised daily as new innovations and improvements in computers and computer related fields affect the new and emerging information culture as it expands across the globe.

The territories in the Caribbean which are being served by the University of the West Indies (UWI) are also being influenced by this dramatic rise in the awareness of the importance of information and are conscious of the need for persons skilled in IT. The UWI must be sensitive to the need to assist these territories in achieving acceptable levels of man-power requirements to participate fully, within national projections, in the movement towards a better and more efficient use of the technological environment, and that sensitivity must be reflected in appropriate programming within the institution.

The Department of Computer Science, Mathematics and Physics at Cave Hill recognises the role which it must play in contributing to the thrust in IT in the region and is proposing the introduction of a programme of offerings designed to bring the Campus to the forefront of this development. The programme comprises: -

A one-year offering leading to a Certificate in Information Technology. An undergraduate OPTION within the Faculty of Science and Technology Regulations leading to the B.Sc. Degree in Information Technology A postgraduate offering leading to the M.Sc. degree in Information Technology. The University of the West Indies in collaboration with the Department of Continuing Education has introduced the one-year offering leading to a Certificate in Information Technology at the Sir Arthur Lewis Community College.
