Programme Description
 
This is a two-year Certificate Programme for Library and Information Assistants offered on a day-release basis through the Department of Continuing Education in collaboration with the Community College Library.
 
The programme seeks to prepare para-professionals to assist professional Librarians in a wide variety of public and technical service functions in libraries and documentation centres.
 
The complete programme consists of 10-core courses and 6 elective courses of which participants are expected to have successfully completed all the core courses and 2 elective courses to be eligible for certification.
 
Participants must have completed Secondary education having attained a strong pass in English Language, that is, General Proficiency Grades I, II and III.
 
Work experience in a Library or information unit would be an asset.
 
A minimum of twelve courses is required for certification and participants are expected to attend about 90% of the class contact hours at the end of the course.
 
A typing speed of about 35 words per minute is expected. This is necessary for final certification.
