The Part-time Secretarial Certificate Programme, organised on a four tiered structure - Receptionist, Clerk-Typist, Secretary Certificate and Secretarial Diploma - is designed to prepare persons for full-time employment in the Secretarial field and to enhance and further develop job related competencies for those persons presently employed.

Ideally, students in this programme should be employed full-time in a Receptionist, Clerk/Typist, or Secretarial position so as to satisfy the requirements concerning practical experience and the awarding of extra credits. Accreditation of Prior Experiential learning (APEL) is considered where students submit evidence of their prior learning which is relevant, recent and significant. For more information, see below or ask the Assistant Coordinators. The programme is also designed to prepare students for the changing roles of the Secretary in today's society of evolving technologies and expanding business organisations.

ABOUT THE PROGRAMME

This specially designed programme is an ideal opportunity to give the adult student a sound knowledge and understanding of the techniques, procedures and the various skills required to operate and succeed in an ever-changing world of work.

This Part-time Secretarial Programme is different from other Secretarial Programmes in the following ways:

It is structured in four levels, so as to enhance the employment capabilities of the students. Thus, a student may be able to obtain a Certificate of Attainment after successfully completing all the courses at any particular level; for example, at the Receptionist or Clerk-Typist levels, The programme levels are as follows:

    • Level one - Receptionist - 240 hours
    • Level two - Clerk/Typist - 576 hours
    • Level three - Secretarial Certificate - 720 hours
    • Level four - Secretarial Diploma - 912hours
  • By virtue of relevant qualification and/or experience students could be granted "Exemptions for Prior Learning" by submitting a portfolio to include work experience, relevant certification, transcripts and testimonials from previous employers. After students are awarded APEL they may start the programme at any level provided the courses with pre-requisites are attempted first.
  • Students could pursue the programme at a pace which suits their personal learning style and other life commitments; for example, students plan their person course schedule. There is no pressure exerted on students as to the amount of courses which could be attempted during any one term, but we recommend that students attempt no more than three courses per semester.
