PROGRAMME DESCRIPTION

The part-time Social Work Certificate Programme comprises thirteen (13) courses (two core courses, ten professional courses, and one elective chosen from the list of areas of specialization given) covering a total of 676 hours. Students can choose to do the optional counseling course as an addition to their programme. The programme is intensive and comprehensive allowing for flexibility depending on a person’s preferred area of specialization.

The programme is modular in nature allowing students to pursue the entire programme or attempt individual courses. However, whatever the option taken, students will be expected to complete at least 80% attendance, submit the required class assignments and pass a final examination (in most cases) in order to obtain credits within the programme, or certification for the individual courses pursued.

The programme focuses on the role and tasks performed by the Social Worker in the execution of his/her duties on a daily basis. It attempts to create first-hand experiences in the classroom by the intensive use of examples, simulations and case studies so as to illustrate the application of concepts, techniques and practices in the real situation. Since Social Work consists of basic approaches in case work/studies, the research methodology course and the communications course develop reporting skills. Students will also undergo an attachment period where they will be engaged in the practical orientation of the programme.
