The Board of Governors, Principal, Staff and Students of the Sir Arthur Lewis Community College express sincere condolences to the Lewis family on the passing of Lady Gladys Lewis, wife of Sir Arthur Lewis. The College community offers special sympathy to her children Elizabeth, Barbara, grand-daughter Samantha, and the Lewis and Jacobs family.

Lady Lewis passed away on Thursday, January 21, 2016 at the age of 98. Born in St. Georges, Grenada on December 19, 1917, she is the daughter of William Henry Jacobs and Henrietta Theodora DuBois. She and Sir Arthur met in London during World War II and were happily married for 44 years.

Since the passing of Sir Arthur in June 1991, Lady Lewis visited his grave twice yearly to lay wreaths at his tomb; on his birth date in January and on the anniversary of his passing. As she grew older, she was accompanied on these trips by her daughter Elizabeth. In the last five years when she was no longer able to travel, Lady Lewis ensured that flowers were placed at the grave of her husband, Sir Arthur. Such was the love and devotion she displayed for the man whom Saint Lucia produced and who went on to gain worldwide recognition for his work in Developmental Economics.

As the nation celebrates Nobel Laureate Day, we pay special tribute to Lady Gladys Lewis whom the College community came to know and respect as a gracious, loving lady whose love for family, commitment and service was tangible and appreciated by all who knew her.

May she rest in peace.
